Translator Gamall

“You scratch out glyphs and think you know them, but I drink them, breathe them. I am glyphs now and for all time!”

Gamall is a centuries-old woman wielding extraordinary glyph magic and the main antagonist in Thief: Deadly Shadows. When in her true form, she hides within her lair in Auldale, accessible only through a canal.

Overview

Gamall was one of the four early Keepers who discovered the Glyph of Transmutation, but proved to have less restraint than her three associates. She retrieved it along with other glyphs that allowed her to siphon the vitality of other beings and extend her life.

History

As time went on, Gamall became a mythical serial killer known as the Hag who purportedly stalked the night slaying victims and stealing their skin. She would appear as an old cripple with a hideous face and would go on to be referenced in a variety of children’s rhymes and night-time tales.

Despite the legend she spawned, few believed she was real. Even the Pagans, who consort with monstrous creatures, regarded her as an abomination.

Some 50 years before the events of Thief: Deadly Shadows, Gamall infiltrated the Shalebridge Cradle and slew an orphan girl named Lauryl to adopt her likeness, only to be witnessed by a young Inspector Drept.

She then interred the girl’s real body in a secret chamber of the Fort Ironwood catacombs and placed special glyphs on the tomb to prevent it from being discovered.

In this disguise, Gamall rejoined the Keepers and was appointed Translator for Caduca, assisting with research and translating her cryptic readings.

This role proved useful as she could easily censor or alter important texts without anyone’s knowledge. While in this form, she also manipulated Orland through letters attributed to Caduca.

Deadly Shadows

After the collapse of the Stonemarket Clock Tower, Gamall murdered Caduca. This may have been done to prevent her from revealing the truth, to succeed her as Interpreter, to have Garrett convicted, or a combination of the three. It is not clear why she turned her to stone.

The Hag's True Form

Her true form, a distorted hulking mass of tightly bound remains, is only revealed after Garrett dispells the glyphs from Lauryl’s grave, interrupting Gamall’s inauguration ceremony and causing chaos to ensue. She kills a number of Keepers and flees into the City to destroy the Final Glyph.

Defeat

Her many forms and all of her powers are lost when Garrett successfully activates the Final Glyph, causing her to revert into a weeping, decrepit old woman. She is quickly apprehended by the Keepers and never seen again.

Abilities

Over the years Gamall obtained a number of powers, namely her ability to inhabit the forms of her victims. In addition to this, she could freely create and transmute glyphs, animate statues, and petrify people.
