The Smith-in-Exile is assumed to be a past member of the Order of the Hammer. He declared the Journals of Morgan anathema, wrote letters, and set forth precepts that were later chronicled.
It is thought that the Smith-in-Exile was present during the Cataclysm, as some of his letters could refer to this event.
The name may be a self-appointed title meaning the former head of the Hammerite Cathedral. Each Hammerite temple has a High Priest who is tightly bound to the facility, and therefore a former High Priest is likely to be perceived as an exile because he was displaced by the Cataclysm.
